Whale Watching in Monterey Bay

Welcome to the "Whale Watching Capital of the World." Because of the deep submarine canyon just offshore, Monterey Bay provides a year-round feeding ground for a massive variety of marine mammals.

What Can You See?

Unlike other coastal destinations, there is no "off-season" in Monterey Bay. Depending on when you visit, you might encounter different giants of the deep.

Spring & Summer

Humpback Whales are the stars. They are famous for "breaching" (jumping out of the water) and lunge-feeding on krill and anchovies.

Summer & Fall

The Blue Whale, the largest animal to ever live on Earth, often visits the bay during these months to feed in the nutrient-rich waters.

Winter & Spring

Watch the Gray Whale migration as thousands of these whales travel from Alaska to the lagoons of Baja California.

Killer Whales (Orcas)

Orcas are the bay's most elusive residents. While they can be seen year-round, they are most common in **April and May** when they follow the Gray Whale calves. Seeing a pod of Orcas in the wild is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Local Pro Tip: Even if it's 80 degrees on land, it is significantly colder on the water. Always bring a windbreaker or a light jacket, and if you're prone to sea-sickness, take precautions 30 minutes before boarding.

Where to Book

Most whale-watching tours depart from Old Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey or from Moss Landing. Moss Landing is closer to the canyon head, often resulting in shorter travel times to see the whales.
