A Window into the Deep
The Monterey Bay Aquarium is more than just a destination; it’s a deep dive into the local ecosystem. From the towering Kelp Forest to the massive Open Sea exhibit, you should take your time. These displays are incredibly educational, and rushing through them means missing the subtle magic of the bay.
Local's "All-Day" Strategy
Because the entrance fee is a significant investment, you should plan to spend the entire day here. My best advice? Ask about "In and Out" privileges when you first enter.
If you get tired or the crowds get a bit heavy, use those privileges to step out for an hour. Walk just a block or two down Cannery Row. Grab a fresh coffee at Plumes (downtown) or treat yourself to some Dipping Dots ice cream right there on the Row. Getting a little sunshine (or the famous Monterey fog) is the perfect way to recharge before heading back inside.
Plan Around the Shows
Before you start wandering, check the daily schedule for feeding times and presentations. You want to make sure you are inside and near the tanks when the divers enter the Kelp Forest or when the Sea Otters are being fed. These demonstrations are often the highlight of the trip.
