The Fisherman's Wharf Experience
A visit to Monterey isn't complete without a walk down Old Fisherman's Wharf. Before the COVID era, you could walk the entire stretch and fill up on hot samples of clam chowder offered by nearly every restaurant. While those sampling days haven't quite returned, the quality of the seafood remains world-class.
Local's Pick: Old Fisherman's Grotto
I have been dining here for over 25 years. It is a true Monterey institution. You will often see the owner, Chris Shake, walking the floor, greeting guests, and ensuring every plate is perfect. It is my personal favorite for a consistent, high-quality seafood dinner.
The Best Pizza in Monterey: Gianni's Pizza
If you have a craving for pizza, there is only one place I recommend: Gianni’s Pizza. Keep in mind, they don't sell slices—you have to commit to a whole pie—but it is worth every penny. While they serve excellent pasta and Italian classics, I always go for the "TonyC Special": A Crispy Chicken Margherita with fresh tomatoes and basil added after cooking. It looks spectacular and tastes even better.
The Local Coffee Ritual: Plumes Coffee House
If you are in downtown Monterey on Alvarado Street, you have to stop at Plumes Coffee House. This isn't your typical "grab-and-go" chain. It is a haven for real coffee lovers.
The Experience: What makes Plumes special is the customization. You pick your beans from their large selection, and they fresh-grind them specifically for your cup. If you are staying a while, ask for a ceramic cup, it is just cooler :) that way.
My Order: I highly recommend a big cup of the "Sweet Italian." It is perfectly balanced and made fresh right in front of you. It’s the best way to fuel up before a walk down to the Wharf.
Sushi & More
For the sushi lovers out there, I have tried them all in this area. My top recommendation is ZUM Sushi. The fish is always fresh, and the atmosphere is welcoming. Indoor and outdoor sitting. (They have a great bento box)
