Choosing the Right Neighborhood
The most important decision you'll make isn't the hotel itself, but the neighborhood. Each town in the Monterey Bay has a completely different "vibe."
1. Cannery Row: The Hub of Action
If you want to be able to walk to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the best seafood spots, stay on Cannery Row. Hotels like the Monterey Plaza or the InterContinental are built directly over the water. From the sidewalk, you can often hear the sea lions barking from the hotel balconies.
2. Pacific Grove: The Quiet Choice
For a more "neighborhood" feel, I always suggest looking at the Victorian Inns in Pacific Grove. It's much quieter than Monterey, and you are within walking distance of the Asilomar Shoreline. If you want to wake up to the sound of the ocean without the crowds, this is the spot.
Local "Pro" Tip: The Parking Secret
Parking in Monterey and Carmel can be a nightmare and very expensive. When you are looking at hotels, always check if they offer on-site parking. Some of the older inns have very limited spaces. If they don't have a lot, you might end up feeding a meter all weekend.
3. Carmel-by-the-Sea: Luxury & Walkability
Carmel is famous for its "No Street Address" policy. If you stay in the village, you can walk to the world-class galleries and then down to the white sand beach. It's the most expensive area, but for a romantic weekend, it's the local favorite to recommend to friends.
