MONTEREY COUNTY is
a large county on the central California coast. At 3324 sq.mi. (over 2
million acres) it is larger than some states. The Monterey Peninsula is
a well-known tourist destination for its beauty and mild climate, and
the Salinas Valley is rich in history and agriculture.
The county has many diverse habitats in the Santa Lucia
Mountains, along the Big Sur coast, and in the drier Diablo Range on
the eastern flank.
Throughout these pages, the abbrevation MTY
means "Monterey County."
