CHIPPING SPARROW Spizella passerina

The CHIPPING SPARROW is a common breeder throughout the woodlands
of California, from oak savanna to high montane confirerous forests. Its
distribution is patchy, however, and generally requires an understory with
grass. Migrants are widespread both spring and fall, but most Chipping
Sparrows winter south of the state. Winter records are quite scarce in
northern California.
Most Chipping Sparrows I've encountered have been breeders in normal
range or migrants. The only records pulled out of my notes specifically
are these:
