BEWICK'S WREN Thryomanes bewickii

This photo was snapped during a Christmas bird count so was just a fortuitous shot. Bewick's Wrens do tend to skulk a fair bit in the shadows, moving their tail a lot, and that tail movement is evident in this photo.

The BEWICK'S WREN is a common resident of chaparral and various scrub habitats throughout much of California, including riparian in Central Valley and along the coast, and pinyon-juniper scrub in eastern mountains. There is some movement downslope or away from colder areas in winter, but long-distance vagrants are rare. All my California records are of birds in standard (usually resident) locales. It is very common in Monterey Co. riparian scrub and chaparral.
