1 Sep 2001 along south side of Klamath River DN |
The BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE is a local resident in alder & willow thickets in extreme northwestern California. I think the species is entirely restricted to coastal Del Norte and Humboldt counties. When I first started birding the State in the 1970s it did not occur regularly much farther south than the Del Norte/Humboldt county line, but today it is regular in local patches of coastal deciduous groves south to at least Eureka.
The only California records are listed below are (1) my personal "state bird" and (2) those with unusual dates or locales (none yet). All my other observations are well within normal status & distributional limits.
2/22/75 Requa DN my state bird; I have since seen them many times at this site and along the side side of the Klamath River DN, plus a few near Eureka HUMSee the family page for county abbreviations. All photos & text © 2001 Don Roberson; all rights reserved.
