MONTEREY COUNTY BIRDATHON

"BIRDIEST COUNTY BIRDATHON" TO SUPPORT BIG SUR ORNITHOLOGY LAB

sponsored annual by Ventana Wildlife Society, Monterey Peninsula Audubon Society, and the Wild Bird Center

In late April or early May of each year, teams and individuals trek to all corners of Monterey County in a joint effort to compile the largest species total possible within 24 hours. In essence it is a huge, cooperative Big Day. Nearly 100 observers have participated in some recent years, all to raise funds for Ventana Wildlife Society's Big Sur Ornithology Lab. In years past when "America's Birdiest County" event was a 24-hour contest, Monterey County was the national winner 2 out of 3 years.

* = primary date stated; the 24-hour period typically runs from 4 p.m. on a Friday to 4 p.m. on a Saturday [the Saturday date is listed], with a countdown following that evening;
in 2004 & 2005 we used the ABC's 24-hour period within a 48-hr 'window', so in those cases the date stated is the middle date of a noon Friday to noon Sunday 'window.'
** = in these years (2003, 2004) we reported 248 species, deleting a species seen only from a boat each year due to ABC rules; we are no longer bound by those rules.
